Maybe make it that some of the larger story-based characters would require getting to know them more over time like with Jade, but if the player is overzealous, could lock themselves out of that story by eating them. How exactly would one know which is which, so they can choose who or how to focus on moving forward? So only some possible dates would be substantial? I get the impression that there's a mix of deep ones like the Pikachu and Jade and "one-night stand" type encounters. So that it!
